Humble Beginnings

In October 1929, the stock market crashed, throwing the United States into the worst economic recession the country had ever seen.  It would become known as the Great Depression, which lasted over a decade.

In 1934, Bill Peters decided to open a hardware store. Despite having little money, Bill was set on serving farmers in the area. Bill gathered $300.00 worth of merchandise and opened Peters Hardware in the Opportunity Township area of Spokane Valley.

Opening a hardware store amid the Great Depression was an extremely difficult task. After all, many people didn’t have a lot of money, and neither did many businesses. Nonetheless, thanks to the ambition and drive of Bill Peters, what was once a small corner store, grew into a strong and respected family business.

Over The Years

Over the years, the merchandise at Peters has been changed and updated to suit the needs of the community, but its motto has remained the same: “At Peters Hardware, you are not just a number; you are family.”

Peters Hardware is the oldest, most respected hardware store in Spokane Valley and plans to be around for years to come. Bill Peters passed the store to his son Wilbur, who then passed it to his son, Gary Peters, who owned and operated this family-friendly hardware store.

Today

Today, nearly nine decades later, Peters Hardware is thriving. This once-small store has outlasted all its competitors.

In April of 2021, Gary Peters passed the Peters Hardware ownership to Larry Myers, who was born and raised in Greenacres and Spokane local.

Larry Myers remembers riding his bike as a child from his childhood home in Greenacres Spokane Valley past Peters Hardware towards the University Shopping Center. He has been a customer of Peters Hardware for decades now and feels grateful to own a store that has such an obvious impact on its local customers and other small businesses alike.

Larry is grateful to the loyal customers who have continued to support this small business for years and values the store's almost century-long connection with the local shoppers. He aims to create an atmosphere where customers can walk through the door and always be greeted with kindness and respect.

“We pride ourselves in not only providing your hardware needs but also being able to offer you quick service that can have you in and out of our doors faster than it would take you to park and walk to the entrance of the chain hardware stores. We want to know you by name, and when we see you, we can’t help but smile and welcome you through our doors because we love our customers and the Spokane Valley community.” -Larry Myers.
